Tourniquets are making a comeback nationwide

Being that prolonged use can lead to limb amputation, tourniquets pretty much stopped being used during the Civil War. However, during the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, a tourniquet’s lifesaving benefits were shown to far outweigh those concerns. It’s a simple Velcro strap with a buckle and a hard plastic rod attached, and knowing how to use one could save your life. Successful applications by law enforcement and EMS continue to reinforce that outlook. Training is imperative, since an incorrectly applied tourniquet can cause damage.
Lightning X Products makes several tactical gunshot/hemorrhage control IFAK kits now that use a Combat Application Tourniquet, or C-A-T for short. Pairing these tourniquets with a hemostat agent like Quikclot and an Israeli pressure bandage gives the patient the best chance at saving life and limb.
